Hollywood fashionistas and make-up artists in America have incorporated CBD products as part of their tool kit for several years. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow are fans of it, yet it is still relatively unknown in the UK for its properties as a beauty aid. However, CBD oil is slowly gathering pace as a beauty trend across the UK and is increasingly being included in a wide range of beauty products. We take a look at CBD oil’s beauty benefits and address how it is effective as a beauty aid

What is CBD Oil?

CBD (short for Cannabinoid) oil is a naturally occurring chemical compound extracted primarily from the hemp plant. It can be consumed in several ways; dropped under the tongue in oil and tincture form, eaten in food, imbibed as part of a drink or inhaled as a vape extract. From a beauty perspective, it can be applied as an oil, topical balm or crème to specific locations on the skin, where the CBD is absorbed trans-dermally. Contrary to rumour, CBD contains minute, trace levels of THC, the psychoactive chemical associated with Marijuana (a cousin of Hemp) and cannot get you high.

CBD The Flare Up Fighter

Lots of value can be derived from incorporating CBD as part of a beauty regime because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant qualities. Research suggests CBD triggers an increase in the production of Anandamide a chemical which enhances the body’s ability to fight inflammation. As such, CBD is useful to reduce the swelling and flare ups which are associated with Eczema, Psoriasis and other related dry skin conditions. CBD also has a soothing quality which helps to alleviate the painfulness which comes from the scratching and skin-breaking which often comes with Eczema.

CBD For Wrinkle Reduction

The 1998 National Institute of Mental Health Study found that CBD has anti-oxidant properties which were more powerful than those found in Vitamins A, C and E. As an anti-oxidant, it tackles free radicals and creates homeostasis within skin cells, which promotes faster self-healing and repair along with the prevention of collagen loss. As such, fine lines and wrinkles are tackled at a cellular level. Research also suggests that CBD may also aid in balancing and controlling sebum production in the skin, which serves to reduce oil and grease.

As well as being rich vitamins A, D and E, CBD also contains high levels of fatty acids, Omegas 3, 6 and 9, which enable the retention of water in the skin.

CBD Tackles Oily Skin and Acne

Despite oily skin often being the result from genetics, stress, hormones or diet, CBD can positively impact it. Hungarian scientists discovered in 2014 that CBD can prevent sebaceous skin glands from producing excess sebum – the  In 2014, researchers from University of Debrecen, Hungary, discovered that CBD oil could stop sebaceous glands in the skin producing excess sebum – an oily secretion which gives skin that shiny appearance. It also was found to prevent the production of inflammatory proteins which generate acne.

The Cumulative Effect: CBD Combined With Other Beauty Products

Like many other beauty products, CBD compliments other skin care products. It is often combined with vitamins and minerals in order to boost its rejuvenating effects.
